Out of the blue and into the rear-view mirror came the kind of icon that the culture and industry of the USA does so well: a red 18 wheeler with a long, square hood and the Confederate flag painted on its radiator grille. Twin exhaust stacks; twin whiplash aerials; flat-bed trailer lightly laden. The emblazoned Johnny Reb flag got closer and closer until the rig blasted past me in a shock wave of raw agricultural power. It was beautifully kept, with chrome trimmings to enhance its red paintwork. The tractor unit had tanks and bits and bobs clamped to its exterior with complete disregard for streamlining. The whole effect was that of a supercharged gypsy caravan freespiriting along at seventy-plus, not giving a hoot for legal niceties.
