Sequence2

The pair are shown in tandem on a stem of Bogbean, Menyanthes trifoliata. The female is laying her eggs on the stem of the plant while the male guards her in what is called the sentinel position. Such contact guarding is usual in most species of damselflies, and full submergence of the female is normal in several of them, but it had never been observed in Pyrrhosoma nymphula.
